Compound Semiconductors Online - Press Releases - As issued by company
July 17, 2008... New York--In a move signaling a coming change in the operational models of many lighting industry representatives and distributors, Greenlight Initiative today announced the launch of its solid state lighting (SSL) qualitative validation and consultation program. Greenlight’s program consists of in-house qualitative testing and validation of current generation SSL fixtures alleviating specifiers’ uncertainties surrounding this exciting new lighting technology. Leading-edge companies that currently have products qualified for inclusion in “the Greenlight Initiative” include Albeo Technologies, Gallium LED Lighting Systems, i2 Systems, Revlite Technologies, Electro-LuminX, and ilumisys. Additional products and companies are in qualification now.
Greenlight's program has moved the company beyond the all too rare consultative approach to a unique position as an active technology advocate in the solid state lighting market space. Nick Nicolakis, President and co-founder of Greenlight Initiative, commented, “In 2006, when we realized the benefits of LED lighting, Greenlight immediately began searching for products that could be utilized by our existing clients. While there were a substantial number of LED-based lighting products claiming to be direct fixture replacements, we quickly discovered that the delivered products were not performing as advertised,” Nicolakis continued. ”Taking a quiet approach, we purchased products as an end user would. After two years and thousands of dollars in product-samples, we have developed a qualitative evaluation approach that includes real-world installations and experience spanning several technology generations.”
When combined with resources and knowledge available from both lighting and solid state lighting-involved industry associations and standards groups, Greenlight Initiative provides key access to the latest industry trends and developments, while filtering out much of the hype that could lead to poorly performing or unreliable products being adopted by commercial, industrial and municipal users. In addition, Greenlight’s overall approach insulates its customers from the sometimes-questionable practices that have become common in the traditional lighting industry, including inappropriate channel incentives and prevalent overages.
Solid state lighting offers key benefits over incandescent and fluorescent sources that are in popular use today. Beyond the advantages in energy efficiency and the elimination of environmental hazards such as mercury and lead, solid state lighting, based on high-brightness LEDs, organic LEDs (OLEDs) and other electroluminescent technologies, promises increased product lifetimes, reduced maintenance costs, and innovative new fixture options that promise better ways to address applications and their environments.
“While fluorescent and incandescent sources have pretty much topped out in terms of brightness and useful life, the LED lighting technology has just begun to show its potential as the eventual replacement for virtually all types of contemporary lighting,” confirmed Nicolakis. “This whole opportunity is about thinking outside the box in terms of how lighting is approached, both in terms of the fixtures themselves, as well as how business is done. We look forward to helping our clients shake up the status quo in positive and constructive ways.”
