August 26, 2010... Analog Devices, Inc. of Norwood, Massachusetts USA, a producer of semiconductors for signal-processing applications, introduced the ADP8870 white LED charge-pump backlight driver. ADI boasts that the ADP8870 lowers the power consumption of battery-operated handheld devices by up to 45 percent without compromising viewing quality.

According to the company, the ADP8870 combines three key functions. It has a programmable backlight LED charge-pump driver and has inputs for a photo transistor to automatically control the LED brightness. It also has a PWM (pulse-width modulation) input to manage the scale of the output current. ADI points out that this combination of features allows the charge-pump to automatically change the current intensity based on the ambient lighting levels and the white content of the displayed image. The automatic change in current intensity reduces overall energy consumption of the charge-pump, and it eliminates the need for a processor to monitor the phototransistor.
