Avago Technologies Introduces Ultra-Thin Auto Focus LED for Use in Digital Still Cameras

February 25, 2010... Avago Technologies of San Jose, California USA, has introduced a new miniature auto focus LED for use in ultra-slim digital still cameras. The company's ASMT-FJ60 is an enhancement to its ASMT-FJ30 auto focus LED series. Avago says the that ASMT-FJ60 is ideal for use as an auxiliary auto focus flash in camera applications that require long distance illumination and a narrow radiation pattern. The company boasts that thin and bright LED has a footprint that can fit on the head of a pencil eraser. Avago says that this new auto focus LED will enable designers to further reduce the overall thickness and size of digital still cameras.

The LED has a light output of 29cd at 20mA. It reportedly incorporates surface mount technology in a dome LED lamp that has an untinted, non-diffused lens. The lens provides light output within a narrow 10-degree radiation pattern to assist the auto focus function in digital still cameras operating in low-light or dark environments.

Avago contends that it offers greater functionality per square inch of printed circuit board (PCB) space while achieving superior performance in terms of brightness and power consumption. According to the company, this allows design engineers to pack more functionality, features, and performance in less space to make even smaller digital cameras.
